Wang Tianyi

Chairman, China Everbright Environment (Group) Limited Part-time Professor and Co-Director of Public-Private Partnership Research Center, Tsinghua University

Wang Tianyi joined China Everbright Environment (Group) Limited (former China Everbright International Co., Ltd.) (HKG: 0257) in January 2010 as Executive Director and General Manager and was appointed CEO in January 2018 and Chairman of the Board in September 2020 and resigned CEO in May 2021. Tianyi was honored the “Best CEO in Asia” by Institutional Investor and Corporate Governance Asia in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021.

In 2020, Tianyi was awarded the 2018-2019 “Green China Person of the Year”. This award was sponsored and organized by six prominent Chinese government organizations and agencies (including the National People’s Congress Environment Protection and Resources Conservation Committee, the National Committee of Population, Resources and Environment of the CPPCC, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the National Radio and Television Administration) and with special support from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It is the highest award established by Chinese government in the field of Ecology and Environment.

After joining Everbright Environment in 2010, and especially after becoming its CEO in 2018, Tianyi has led Everbright Environment become China’s biggest environment company in revenue, profit and carbon-negative, and world’s largest waste-to-energy company.

Tianyi was admitted as an honor student to Tsinghua University in 1980, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in electronics, a master’s degree in business, and a doctorate degree in economics.

Tianyi joined Yantai University in 1988 and became one of the youngest professors in 1999. He was appointed Dean of the Business School in 1998 and Vice-Chancellor of Yantai University in 1999.

In 2000, Tianyi became the Deputy Mayor of Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province, and was one of the youngest government leaders in China. During his 8 years in Jinan, Tianyi was responsible for city’s international trade, foreign investment, and foreign affairs. In 2008, he was appointed President of Shandong Academy of Sciences.

From 1997 to 1998, Tianyi stayed in USA as a Visiting Scholar at UCLA and University of La Verne. In 2002, he participated in China High Official Training Program in Harvard University. In 2007, he participated CCP Theory Training Program.

Tianyi has been a part-time professor at Tsinghua University since 2015 and the Co-Director of the Public-Private Partnership Research Center of Tsinghua University. He is also currently involved in the following organizations and programs:

  • Advisory Member, the Belt and Road Initiative International Green Development Coalition (BRIGC)
  • Vice Chairman, China Ecological Civilization Research and Promotion Association
  • Vice Chairman, the CAST Alliance for Ecological and Environmental Sciences and Industry
  • PPP Expert in the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe
  • Advisor, China Business Research Center, the National University of Singapore.

He also served as Member of Mainland Investment and Trade Advisory Committee of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council from 2011 to 2014.
